Why Women Are Angry

We all know some of the reasons women are so angry.

The pay gap. The glass ceiling. The disproportionate mental load we carry for our families. The guilt we feel as moms if we work. The guilt we feel as moms if we don’t. That our bodies are increasingly being regulated and controlled by government in a way that would never happen to men. The fact that we cannot go outside at night and be safe. The fact that we cannot go outside during the day and be safe. The fact that we are murdered by those who profess to love us at alarmingly high rates. We are angry that we are so frequently sexually assaulted. We are angry we are then blamed for the assault. We are angry we are pressured to breastfeed and then shamed for breastfeeding. We are angry that every aspect of our existence is either sexualized, or dismissed. These are all very serious and real reasons why women are angry.

Here are some less serious reasons why women are angry.

No pockets (or no functional pockets) in our clothing. If you are under a certain size, it is very difficult to find clothing not designed for a seventeen year old. If you are over a certain size, it is hard to find clothing that is fashionable. Plus size women are tired of being called ‘plus size’. They are tired of paying 3 times as much for a shirt because ‘it has extra material’, when men’s clothing comes in a whole range of sizes for the same price as the smallest size. Hell, men’s ‘plus sizes’ are referred to as “Big and Tall”, which sure sounds a lot more appealing than ‘plus size’. Smaller sized women are tired of being called “skinny bitches” (mainly by other women). We are all tired of being a size 6 in one line of clothing and a size 12 in another, or a 16 in one and a 22 in another. All women are angry that their pay cheques, job promotions, table seating in restaurants and even the ability to be taken seriously at a doctors office are affected by their looks and body size.

We are angry about paying the “pink tax”. If you aren’t aware, this is where companies up charge women for things like razors, shaving cream, hairbrushes and combs, because they are designed in more feminine colours or patterns. It is the exact same product mind you, but way more expensive.

We are angry that there are multiple birth control methods designed for women and only one (condom) for men. With all the advances in science, it seems pretty strange that a male birth control pill has yet to be developed. Apparently, erectile dysfunction was a more important thing to solve.

We are tired of being told to smile more.

We are tired of society deciding we have some ‘flaw’ and then offering us the ‘solution’ for it. (I see you Dove campaign to make my underarms ‘look flawless’).

We are angry that cereal still does not come in a resealable bag.

There are so many reasons women have to be angry and I believe that functional pockets (in a stylish, well-fitting affordable outfit) to hold pepper spray and a taser would go a long way towards resolving at least some of the anger.
